Crowdsourced walking routes for parents navigating curbs, stairs, and rough terrain with wheels
# Stroller Route Scout: Smooth Path Mapper
## The Problem
Every parent with a stroller has experienced the frustration of a "short" route that becomes an obstacle course—unmarked stairs, crumbling curbs, sudden gravel patches, or sidewalks that simply end. Standard mapping apps optimize for distance or traffic, not for wheels on pavement. Neighborhoods need crowdsourced knowledge about which paths are actually smooth, where the good curb cuts are, and which routes have shade and benches for tired caregivers.
## Who Uses It
**Primary Users:**
- **Parents with strollers** navigating daily routes to parks, pediatricians, libraries, and grocery stores
- **Caregivers pushing mobility carts** for elderly relatives who need smooth, predictable paths
- **Wheelchair users and their companions** who benefit from the same curb-cut and surface data
- **Dog walkers with wagons** hauling gear to the dog park
**Contributors:**
- **Neighborhood walkers** who notice where sidewalks are cracked or where new curb cuts were installed
- **Local business owners** who want to mark their entrances as stroller-accessible
- **City works enthusiasts** who track sidewalk repairs and construction zones
## Core Features
1. **Route Submission with Obstacle Tags**: Anyone can draw a route on a map between two points and tag segments with conditions: "smooth pavement," "broken curb," "stairs," "steep grade," "gravel patch," "no curb cut." Each tag includes optional photo evidence.
2. **Destination Anchoring via Civic Services**: Routes connect to real destinations pulled from WellSpr.ing—parks, libraries, health clinics, city offices—so users search "smooth route to Maple Street Library" rather than raw addresses.
3. **Stroller Hand-Me-Down Feed**: A sidebar shows free strollers, wagons, and kid-hauling gear available in the neighborhood, pulled from the community free items pool. Parents helping parents.
4. **Construction & Detour Alerts**: Local news items mentioning sidewalk work, street closures, or accessibility projects surface automatically on affected routes, so users know before they walk into a construction zone.
5. **Rest Stop Mapping**: Contributors can mark benches, shaded areas, water fountains, and family-friendly bathroom access along routes. Each rest stop shows "last confirmed" date.
6. **Upvote/Downvote Route Quality**: Users rate routes after walking them. A route marked "smooth" six months ago that's now torn up gets downvoted and flagged for review.
7. **Accessibility Score Display**: Each route shows a simple 1-5 wheel rating based on aggregated tags: 5 wheels = "glass smooth, full shade, benches"; 1 wheel = "survivable but bring patience."
## WellSpr.ing Integration Points
### MCP Tools (POST to https://wellspr.ing/mcp via JSON-RPC 2.0)
| Tool | Usage |
|------|-------|
| `search_civic_services` | Find destination anchors—search "library," "park," "health clinic" to populate the route endpoint picker |
| `get_city_services` | Pull official city service locations (permit offices, rec centers) as potential route destinations |
| `get_free_items` | Display available strollers, wagons, and mobility gear in the "Hand-Me-Downs" sidebar |
| `get_local_news` | Surface news items about sidewalk construction, accessibility improvements, or street closures to overlay on affected routes |
| `get_businesses` | Find family-friendly businesses (cafes with changing tables, pharmacies) as waypoints or rest stops |
| `get_business_detail` | When a user taps a business waypoint, show details including accessibility notes if available |
| `ask_ody` | Power a "Ask about this route" feature where users can ask natural language questions like "Is there shade on the walk from Oak Park to the library?" |
| `submit_business` | Allow users to register a new family-friendly business or service as a potential route waypoint |
### REST Endpoints
| Endpoint | Usage |
|----------|-------|
| `GET /api/geo/portals?area_code=NNN` | Retrieve geographic portal data for the local area to establish map boundaries and neighborhood context |
### Future Capabilities (Roadmap: not yet live)
- **Merchant accessibility badges**: A future covenant commerce feature could let businesses self-certify as stroller-accessible with automatic door sensors, wide aisles, etc.
- **Route verification bounties**: Future incentive system where frequent contributors earn recognition for keeping route data fresh
