Crowdsource the safest, most interesting walking routes to school — marked by the kids who walk them.
# Sidewalk Chalk Trail: Kid-Safe Walk Route Mapper
## The Problem
Getting kids to walk to school is better for health, traffic, and community connection — but parents often drive because they don't know which routes are actually safe and who else walks them. Route information lives in parents' heads and evaporates when families move away. New families, especially, have no way to discover the informal "everybody walks down Maple Street because Mrs. Chen waves from her porch" knowledge that makes school walks feel safe.
## Who Uses It
**The Cautious New Parent (Maria)**: Just moved to the neighborhood, her 7-year-old starts at Jefferson Elementary in three weeks. She needs to figure out the 0.6-mile walk but doesn't know which streets have crossing guards, which intersections are sketchy, or whether other families even walk this route.
**The Experienced Walking Parent (DeShawn)**: Has walked his kids to school for four years. Knows every friendly dog, every house that gives out Halloween candy year-round, every shortcut through the park. Wants his knowledge to help other families but has no good way to share it.
**The Walking School Bus Coordinator (Principal Okonkwo)**: Trying to organize groups of kids who walk together with rotating parent supervision. Needs to see where route clusters naturally form and which families live along common paths.
**The Enthusiastic Kid (Zoe, age 9)**: Actually walks the route daily and notices things adults miss — the chalk hopscotch that appears every Tuesday, the cat in the window, the "scary house" everyone runs past. Her observations make routes feel real to other kids.
## Core Features
1. **Route Drawing with Landmarks**: Anyone can trace a walking route on a map from home-area (anonymized to block level) to school, dropping pins for landmarks with kid-friendly categories: 🐕 Friendly Dog, 🎨 Cool Art, 👋 Friendly Neighbor, 🚸 Crossing Guard, 🏠 Safe House, ⚠️ Careful Here, ✨ Secret Shortcut.
2. **"Golden Route" Consensus View**: When multiple families submit overlapping routes, the system highlights the most-walked path segments in gold. Hover to see "12 families walk this block" — instant social proof for nervous parents.
3. **Kid Voice Capture**: A special "Kid Report" mode with big icons and voice-to-text lets children add their own landmarks. These appear with a chalk-drawing visual style and the child's first name/age ("Zoe, 9: There's a cat here EVERY day").
4. **School Cluster Dashboard**: For each school, show a heat map of where walking families live, suggested walking school bus pickup points, and a "Find Walking Buddies" feature that connects families on similar routes (opt-in, shows only cross-streets, not addresses).
5. **Seasonal/Temporal Tags**: Mark landmarks as "morning only" (crossing guard), "spring only" (the house with the incredible tulips), or "avoid in rain" (that one puddle that eats shoes). Routes can show different recommendations for 7:30 AM vs 3:15 PM.
6. **New Family Welcome Packet**: Generate a printable PDF for any school showing the top 3 golden routes, landmark highlights, and walking school bus contact info — perfect for school offices to hand to enrolling families.
7. **Local Business "Kid Stop" Registration**: Businesses can register as official "Kid Stops" — safe places a child can go if they feel unsafe or need help. These get verified and show with a special trusted icon.
## WellSpr.ing Integration Points
### MCP Tools (via POST to `https://wellspr.ing/mcp`, JSON-RPC 2.0)
**`get_businesses`**: Pull local businesses near school routes to identify potential "Kid Stop" locations — cafes, libraries, shops with regular hours and street presence. Display these as suggested safe havens along routes.
**`get_city_services`**: Retrieve information about crossing guard locations, school zone signage, and public safety services. Cross-reference with community-reported crossing guard pins for validation.
**`search_civic_services`**: Find existing Safe Routes to School programs, walking school bus initiatives, or school transportation services that this tool should connect to rather than duplicate.
**`get_civic_ideas`**: Surface community-submitted ideas related to pedestrian safety, school transportation, or neighborhood walkability. Show relevant ideas on route pages ("3 neighbors have suggested a crosswalk here").
**`submit_business`**: Allow local businesses to self-register as "Kid Stop" safe havens through the existing business submission flow, with a special "kid_stop" category flag.
**`ask_ody`**: Power a "Ask about this route" feature where parents can get contextual answers about school walking — "Is there a crossing guard at Oak and Main?" Ody can synthesize civic data with community submissions.
**`get_business_detail`**: When users tap a business marked as a Kid Stop or route landmark, pull full details including hours, contact info, and verification status.
**`reach_number`**: Enable parents to contact walking school bus coordinators or other opt-in route buddies through privacy-preserving relay numbers.
### REST Endpoints
**`GET /api/officials`**: Display local elected officials on school pages — useful for parents wanting to advocate for infrastructure improvements on dangerous route segments.
**`GET /api/geo/portals?area_code=NNN`**: Discover adjacent neighborhood nodes. When a school serves multiple neighborhoods, show which communities have active route data and link to their portals.
### Future Integration Opportunities
**Roadmap (not yet live)**: A "report infrastructure issue" flow that submits pothole/broken-sidewalk reports to city 311 systems would be natural. For now, display a link to the city's existing 311 portal on "Careful Here" pins.
**Roadmap (not yet live)**: Merchant verification through Covenant Commerce would strengthen the "Kid Stop" program with trust signals. For now, Kid Stops are community-vouched only.
